The Other Image is a visual ethnography blog I started in 2011. Both photography and ethnography seek to convey stories of people and places, of particularities, often stubborn yet entangled with the wider world. I believe that arts and academia add to each other in this endeavour. Together, they can seed impressions that challenge general assumptions and let the world appear in a different light. At their best, they help us see the other image.
The Other Image is my attempt to bring visual and academic work together on a practical basis. It is not a portfolio to showcase polished images. Making visual and academic work integral to each other is an ongoing experiment. Consisting of a set of images or a short video together with a brief description, the posts provide brief glimpses and reflections of events and places I encounter during research and at home. Very often, these vignettes hold the seed of an idea to an academic article or talk.
